A worker's idea of art

The history museum is under renovation and the workers feel free to make their contribution. This was the site that awaited for me one morning on the way to my office, a cute intervention on a large gypsum model decorating the hall.

Transylvanian artistic kitsch II

The greatest attraction are the Gypsy palaces. they exist in various places in Transylvania (an entire neighborhood in Huedin, these two twin buildings in Campia Turzii, the so-called "Villa Iţi" from Turda (on sale for half a year and nobody dares buy it for an awesome contemporary art gallery!), the king's palace and the emperor's palace in Sibiu, etc. the newly rich Gypsies, most of them left for "business" in western Europe, started building these residences in the 1990s. Some remain unfinished and uninhabited to this day.

From time to time there are the elections, as silly as everywhere but maybe sometimes more kitsch and in the same time more inventive. the two ads are just two examples from the campaign in June 2008 in Aiud. Ion Dumitrel, boldly gazing at the shy and the Orthodox church reflected in the shop front, ran under the slogan "power.decision.trust". Duma Emilian, a retired old man running as independent for local town councilor, organized his campaign the best he could.

Old buildings are pure art treasures. these photos were taking during the transformation of an old army building in a history museum in Targu Mures:

Very useful indication in the abandoned rooms, pointing to the airport, the zoo, and best of all, the communist room for "political and educational activities".

a once important note (though I wonder in which context): "Postpone other reasons"

An important pottery center in the region also displayed these two historical plates: one with the socialist national coat of arms and the second with an episode from 1601, when Mihai Viteazu, a local ruler who wanted to conquer and rule together all three medieval Romanian states, ended up with his head severed.

Pure urban confusion in Cluj-Napoca.

and the hairy shopping trolley in one of the expensive food stores in town.

Transylvanian artistic kitsch I

This is a wide topic in itself, and I believe that only a few examples will suffice for now.
The first category comprises mannequins, from those with broken noses to the ugliest baby boy advertising some sales and ending with dolls forgotten by children on the street over night. Here are some of these examples of unintentional urban post-revolutionary kitsch.

Modern vampires in Transylvania

The reassuring atmosphere at the dentist's in Transylvania is a visual historical reference to the province's specificity.

Me after having two teeth pulled out at once, so as not to endure the process twice.

The above mentioned teeth against the X-ray.

Dacian remakes

Today I decided to adhere to an association of historical re-enactment. In my mind I will be a Roman priestess, blessing the troops before battle. But I like the Dacians as well, so here is what I did under this inspiration and thinking of my future holy mission:

"The so-called goddess Bendis", a sort of Dacian Diana (after an ancient statuette)

Fragments of Dacian painted pottery decorated with geometrical motifs and various exotic or imagined animals.

Sculptures in Ordino

These are some improvised sculptures I made during the UNESCO art camp in Ordino, Andorra, July-August 2008. I've never played with sculpture before and metal seems a very difficult material to approach thus, but this was a fun improvisation, out of scarps, having someone to do the actual work of piecing them together according to our indications. They were naturally left there, as none of us could carry them away on a plane.

I made it! "The medieval city"

This is just one part of the series from the exhibition I am preparing for the opening of the Urban Cultural Center in Cluj-Napoca. It is mixed technique: linocut, collage, acrylic  on canvas.
There will also be the individual linocuts (to show the units of the larger works) and an installation (in the making).

Bontida

Beauties on sale during the cultural days of Bontida organized in august at the homonym castle in Transylvania, near Cluj. The courtyard of the Banffy Palace was dedicated to the market. A nice antiquity market, in fact rather a flo market and an unintentional art center. I almost married a gypsy from asking about the price of something.
